I've mostly been doing actual SPELLS to get to 205 -- not sure why you're having bad luck, but it's all been just spells with trivials near the level I'm at (mostly doing 207 trivials now, for instance).
However, my plan is gonna change -- I am planning on doing a lot of "parchment solutions" to get me working
up to as high as 243. After that, it's using the solutions to make parchments (sub-243 trivial) to make spells (243-300 triv).
Please use this link to show all the combines and sub-combines to
do the parchment solutions (and parchments). I've not put any
post-243 spells on here yet, but they all rely on a parchment solution to make a parchment and then making a special ink (low trivials) to make the spells. This chart is GNecrOMancEr heavy, so it's not complete. Still, the parchments and parchment solutions are all here and all common to everyone.
Note that the trick to most of the higher parchment solutions is:
1) They are 150-200 pp per combine
2) They require 5 looted Saltpeters
3) They require 2 looted Crystallized Sulfurs
