Hiya folks! Been awhile, as I am unable to run EQ on my old machine - I'm running an old PII from early 98 - Ack! Framerates are horendous, got me killed last time I was on. (Thanks again for the rez Iro) I'm putting together an order for pc components on NewEgg, so hopefully I'll be back soon. Plan is a P4 and DSL, but we'll see about the DSL. I'll be happy to log on with a new machine even on my dial-up. Got a bad jones going on here. Doh! I miss the community you people bring to the game.

See you all soon I hope!!

Also, I'm posting a couple pics of my daughter and I geocaching last weekend.

We've missed you, Rhute. Hope you get back in game soon.

(Somebody please tell me what geocaching is? Without looking it up, it sounds like collecting rocks.)

I have good friends who both Geocache and Letterbox.

In both cases it's effectively "hide a treasure, give directions, and let people find the treasure." Often the 'treasure' is a log book where people will leave a stamp, unique to themselves. The placer of the treasure will come back to the spot weeks later and pick up the book full of stamps, and replace it with a new one.

There are twists on this whole theme (sometimes a toy or other small object is left there to be picked up and taken to another 'trove', and there are stories/pictures about it's travel around teh country and the world).

Geocaching: Gives you Lat/Lon coordinates and you use GPS to find your way to spot

Letterboxing: Is more of an orienteering thing ("Begin at Hangman's Tree...go due north along route 7 for 0.37 miles and turn left at the bush shaped like an elephant....etc etc...)

There are whole websites dedicated to both hobbies. The "treasure" is often an old film cannister cuz it's small, hidable, waterproof and you can keep a rolled-up scroll in there for stamping upon.

For all this, I've never once engaged in either activity :)

Geocaching will usually go something like:
Go to X Coordinates and find a phone number on a plaque. Add the numbers together and blah blah blah to get your second coordinates....and so on and so on until you find the cache. The cache is full of trinkets, of which you are supposed to take one and leave one of your own. There is generally a logbook and a disposable camera as well so the original placer of the cache has a record of it. Some people have "travel bugs" which are little metal bugs with unique numbers that you can track online. Most of them deliberately send you along a particular trail or past a particular landmark. It's basically hiking with a twist. Go to http://www.geocaching.com/ to see what's near you. There are several caches within a mile or two of our house that take you on walking tours of the historic downtown areas.

There are something like 100,000 Geocache sites worldwide in 190 countries. Majority in the US and Canada. Most of what we find are micro-cache, 35m film canister with log books inside. There are several multi-cache sites in my region, one cacher in particular is a bit of a riddler so we've been working on one of his for over a week now. Get's me outside doing stuff, and my daughter likes it a ton. (Note to self: Must buy her a GPS receiver so I can have mine back) Our state organization, MiGO (Michigan Geocaching Organization - www.mi-geocaching.org ) hosts CITO events, or Cache In Trash Out, where we meet at some GPS co-ordinates and clean up a public park for a couple hours and then cook lunch. Pretty cool, and good for the environment too. Did I mention I'm a druid??

If you go to www.geocaching.com, this is where you find the sites in your nieghborhood. We are Team Rj&J on this site, if you look up our profile you will find a picture of my daughter and I (Haven't gotten it resized for the WoV site yet :/)

I miss the WoV family a helluva lot, hopefully I'll return some time soon.
Must EQ, must EQ, must EQ, must EQ, must EQ...................
