How do any of you deal with spam? It's getting out of hand and I haven't really found a decent option. The best I have seen so far are:

Is too exclusive. Filters out mail I actually want.

Looks really good, and I have been told it works very well. BUT it's not free...hehe. If anyone has tried this and likes it and can tell me it's worth it please do I like the challenge/response approach to this one.

Sorry Z, but I have actually given up 100% on my personal e-mail due to SPAM. Haven't opened my inbox in over a year. That was my solution. If I were to guess, I'd say the ratio of SPAM-to-good email was something around 5,000 to 1, without exaggeration.

I do all my emailing through work now, where the SPAM blocking is blackboxed and handled by large sys admin departments so I can't guess how it works.

To be honest, the link below is where I turn for future SPAM blocking:

I know it's not helpful, but my answer stands: I gave up.

Something to make you think and some testing results for filters.

I know to most peeps the thought of AOL makes them cringe but it is my ISP. I must admit as addvertised for 9.0 they do an awsome job of 1) doing away with spam and 2) Pop-up blocker!

What happens if I take both the red and the blue pill at the same time?

I deal with the problem by holding two email accounts. One is my personal account that I only give out to trusted sources and use for personal purposes. That account I receive, on average, one or two spam messages per month. The second account is my trash account that I use for anything else that requires an email address. On that account I receive approximately 30 spam messages a day on everything from online prescriptions to baldness miracle cure pills that only work on a full moon while a herd of rabid turtles are molting in your living room on the 37th day of December. I won't even go into the porn ads that come in the mess also. (Is it legal to send X rated pictures in emails to random people???) The junk account is also the one I have the antivirus scan each message 12 times over just to be certain something "clever" doesn't ever come in through that account...

But, overall my method works pretty well. If the good account has a new message I can be reasonably sure it's something I should look at. If my junk account has 20 new messages I can quickly scan over the message subjects before hitting the delete key without worrying that I would accidentally delete something important. (checking the subjects just in case something comes in that I was supposed to get on that account, which is pretty rare actually)

I've made watch filters that will delete and not download from whole networks. Then if someone I want mail from is on one of those I make a filter to retrieve their mail and give a higher priority than the delete filter.

i.e.
Do Not Retrieve AOL.com -- do not retrieve and delete from email server. Priority 400.

Retrieve friend at aol.com -- retrieve and do not leave on server -- Priority 1000

I have several email addresses myself, but somehow my "private" email address has suddenly been getting spammed a couple of times a day. /shrug

Bayesian filters are the latest tools in spam fighting. Different types abound. The basic idea is that you control what spam is to you and what is not, and the filters "learn" was you consider spam. Blacklists/whitelists are NOT effective in fighting spam. I have an idea that turns the argument on its head (PM/email me if you are curious) One proggie you may want to check out is:
