Last night (first time I've played since LDoN launched) there was a noticable change in my pet's tanking abilities. At first I wondered if it was something special about "Drolvarg Ragers", perhaps they required a magic weapon to hit...because there was my pet, fighting probably his 30th such D. Rager, and I saw "..and misses", "...and misses", "...and misses" about 20 times in a row.

"How odd!", thought I. We kept going. But it wasn't just that he was missing on Ragers. It was that he was missing EVERYTHING.

"Perhaps because we haven't armed him..." thought Xandamir. Hmmm...possibly, but I'm bothered by the idea that my pet never seemed to rely on weapons so strongly, and besides, who wants to feel that a pair of rusty daggers turn a pet into a super tank?

So...I watched, and kept some mental notes...here's what I found...

My pet tended to have HUGE strings of misses (20-50 in a row) and smaller strings of hits (10-20) in a row. Now, if EVERY hit on a mob was a miss, I'd say "ok, that mob can't be hit AT ALL by my pet"...but that wasn't the case. My pet would occasionally hit for 10-20 in a row...then miss for 40 in a row, for example. VERY non-random arrangement of numbers.

From a general "feel" for my pet over the years, I'd say that since I last played (before LDoN launched), my pet's hit rate dropped from about 80% to 30%, and the arrangement of the hits vs. misses now is in "clumps" rather than a "random walk".

Has anyone else seen something like this?

I've noticed that you have to be in pretty close to see your pet hits. But the range for pet misses is a wider range to be in.

So if you are standing in the right spot away from your pet, you will see all misses, and none of the hits.

Del and I do fighting with our pets all the time, and I've not noticed any difference in DPS, but sometimes I don't see the hit messages.

Huh...if this is it, then I'll be thrilled! I didn't think I was sitting any farther than usual from my pet, but I'll move in next hunt and compare. Thanks for the tip, Llaffer!

I have noticed this also but the mobs still seem to drop in the same amount of time. I do think something is messed up tho. Could be they screwed up the messages.

I thought pet hits were magic by default?

Not all, as far as I know. The guy who wrote the "NecroGnomicon" website did a lot of research on pets, and he confirmed that the 12th level necro pet was the first one that hits for magic damage in the necro line of pets. But that's something I've never confirmed.

My pets have always been so worthless that I have not noticed any difference. Their only real use tome is stalling any adds that come when soloing.

Kat, I use my doggie because of the off chance he will occasionally stun a mob at the EXACT time I need him to :lol: Also, when a mob gets down to 4 or 5% and it's just not worth it to throw another dot on him, I let doggie finish it. Another good reason for doggie is those hard to reach mobs...there are countless spiders who would have gotten away after jumping off the frenzy ledge if doggie hadn't fearlessly dived after them. And perhaps the most important thing is just those few extra seconds to gate or run when things go bad...remember...doggie enrages now :grin:

I did some testing last night and this morning on this. I charmed a rat in PoD and had it attack something. I did NO damage to the creature. All I saw was a string of misses and the occasional hit from my pet, but the creature died just as fast as usual. Next fight I literally sat on top of my pet while he fought, and saw all of his hits. It seems like for whatever reason the range for seeing your pet's hits has been seriously reduced, by mistake I'm assuming, while the range of his misses is the same as it has always been. Some of you pet wielders try sitting right by your pet while he fights and see if you get similar results :)
