Man! Never would have thought that there would be a case for using a Pally as a main tank. Used to play one, and never was very good as a tank.

What do you mean it's just a game? Now you sound like my wife....

Er, nevermind, she just walked into the room.....

Hmmmm, I'll give you a multiple choice quiz on that one Iro...

A) He is married and his wife is pregnant

B) He prefers to play his alt (Ceerril)

C) He avoids you

D) He is playing in stealth mode!

Answer correctly and you win........well, nothing, but pride in your deduction skills!

Doh!
Don't like to hear that!! Well, I will back Surphat on this one, I am sure he had one tied behind his back or something. There had to be a disadvantage, me finds it hard to believe a dworf got beaten up!

Started quite a debate. I think the whole gist of the post was that ya want the Warrior and Monk's to do what ya need em to do and what the Paladan can't...Deal massive amounts of damage. So what do ya expect the Paladan to do???? How do you expect him to be an effective mate???

You say Gulog that the Paladin cant maintain agro because the Warrior is dealing so much damage. He can't get off spells when he has the agro because he is getting interrupted.

While he is getting interrupted, he is taking hits, he has agro.

If he loses agro, he can get off spells. I have taken agro off of much higher level Warriors and been told to stop it. How....by chain stunning. Gets em every time. I have even pulled critters off clerics by chain stunning, stops em in there tracks to let the Cleric get out of reach and makes em real mad at the paladan.

So, if the critter is hitting on Surphat or Doran, you will be doing the most damage you possibly can. If Surphat or Doran goes down..welcome the new MT..Gulog. This is taking nothing away from the Warrior. This is making full use of members of the team. I don't suggest that at 45, surphat be MT ahead of a lvl 50+ Warrior because the Warrior has so much more AC. But the article is suggesting that if both are comperable in AC, ya might think a little differently.

In situations where a MT is really needed...if people wait til he has the aggro before they attack there is no problem...warrior, paladin, whoever. On a side note: I think paladin's are a great and underappreciated class. I mean, anything a gnome can be can only be so bad, right?

Good point Surliman, and it does make sense, however I still stand by my previous point. It would be more effective to let the warrior tank, since they will do the same amount of dmg either way, and let the pally's bring out the 2h weaps.

Now if you're talking about battling udead, well that's a different story, very tough to get the aggro away from a pally in that circumstance, but with a warriors duel weild and more chances for rispostes; Why take the dmg while casting a spell on the mob instead of hitting it for 150+ dmg with your two hander?

Not saying that a pally can't main tank, just the question of "why" would come into play when there is a tried and true method to this.

The question is "Why take the dmg while casting a spell on the mob instead of hitting it for 150+ dmg with your two hander?"

You are making good points and but avoiding the issue of supperior damage. Even with a 2hander doing 150+ damage, the Paladan would be unlikely to take agro off the Warrior and certainly couldn't outdamage the War. The idea here is basically, have the Paladan holding agro so the Warrior/Monk/Rogue can hit from behind and not get Dodged or Blocked. More hits land, more damage done, faster critter dies, less damage Paladin takes. Reverse roles, Paladin in back and War in front, Paladin does 1/2 to 3/4(at Best) the damage of the War. The war misses or is blocked 1/4 - 1/8th the time. We could be talking up to 50% less damage over a period of time to the critter which would make up for any AC difference between the War and the Paladin in a hurry as the critter gets to beat on the War longer. I am not a mathematical nut so don't know how far off these numbers may be, but they give the idea.

And the spell casting has only the purpose of holding agro of the critter from the War who is doing all that damage. The Paladan's job is to do as much damage as possible, but above all, hold agro! I have a 29 War and 45 Paladan. As they get bigger, may get more chance to try out some things and settle this in my own mind at least.

I figured as a cleric I would give my opinion....

/shrug

Its all meat that needs healing to me :P

Actually, I do think the pali as the main tank makes sense for the reasons thats were listed in the original post (allowing the war to become a damage dealer like a monk/ranger/rogue without being stunned or bashed). And besides, it lets the pali think hes doing something worthwhile for once :P
