I'm interested in registering a domain name for an organization and having an active web page, something like:

www.

Can someone give me some advice on:

1) How to register
2) How to figure out who is/should be hosting the actual site
3) How I access that site to add content, etc
4) How much I can expect to shell out

Thanks...total newbie at this, but its for some local grassroots politics and I'd rather do it at the "www.*.org" level than host it off of my own personal web page.

when i had to do mine .. i went to yahoo/geocities.. and it was pretty self explanatory .. i just used them to host and didnt take long.. im sure there are cheaper routes lol but since im such a newbie i figured it would be best way to go

ive got a couple of subdomains here and there...if i was starting out, id google 'free web hosts' and add keywords like 'php' and 'mysql'

theres a bunch out there...you shouldnt have to pay anything

bravenet offers a bunch of free tools if you like that kind of thing

content uploads are usually ftp or similar...so far i havent been spammed as a result of signing up for any free hosting

In looking about, I see that the domain registration services out there are as evil as capitalism and the web will allow. I find NUMEROUS links to "free domain name registrations", but when I go to their links, EVERY one so far has been NOT free, but instead they just used those words to get me to their site where they then want to charge me $20 or $15 or whatever for registering my domain.

This is why I hate marketing. It's all lies lies lies!

I'm not unwilling to PAY for my services, but if someone says they're gonna give me something for free, I want it for free.

Soooooo...can anyone point me to a REAL , TRUE FREE domain name registration of the "www.*.org" type?

It would appear that once I've registered, I may be able to find a
company willing to host me for free, but getting the domain registered
for free seems to be impossible. True?

yes, true...the domain reg service and host are separate things

thats why i use subdomains...they can be had free

drex, thats why i posted to yahoo.. they dont hide anything .. the only free stuff is non domain site but you go into the business section and it explains it to you .. atleast how they handle it

Drexx, PM me and I can tell you a couple things ... I can also get you a domain name for $9.00 a year. There are no Free .com/org/net registrations that I have ever seen.

Note that $9.00 gets you a name, not somewhere to host it. Most places will want to charge something for that as well ... yeah, it's a racket.

godaddy.com is $8.95/yr and is who I normally use, just make sure you uncheck all "send me info on blah" options because they have LOTS of info to dish out if you allow it

There are some that are as low as $3/yr but I've heard horror stories about the spam that generally follows registering through them. Just stay away from Network Solutions as they have yet to realize they no longer have a monopoly on domain registration and still charge $35/yr or so.

As for hosting I have had a lot of success with hostgator.com. They have relatively cheap packages and they include Fantastico, which is a sickeningly easy way to add all sorts of goodies such as message boards, chat rooms, photo galleries, etc.
