Hello WoV, I was wondering if anyone out there is using a satellite internet provider. I recently moved out to a very rural area (my new neighbors are a pack of coyotes). I signed up for Wild Blue but at just the basic price level it's quite slow even for just minimal web browsing. Is anyone playing on a satellite service, if so what is it? ~the ghost of Durezil's past |

Oh my gosh. I hope Maden sees this post. He's the only one I know who uses it, and it doesn't perform really well for him. Sounds like a neat neighborhood, though, Dure! Going to ruralize a bit, eh? |

My understanding is that satellite for just about anything is quite fast, except gaming. The reason is that satellite transfers large packets of info at a time. This transfer is at lightning speed but there is a time delay between transfers. In game, this means that you lag, lag, lag, then all of a sudden everything snaps into place. Rinse and repeat. Disclaimer: I am just repeating what I heard and I only have a hazy idea at best. Now someone who really knows can correct me ![]() |

One of my friends is using Hughes net. It's some kind of satellite internet thing. He said it's faster then a phone modem, but slower then dsl. |

if you get cell phone reception where you live, you may be able to get a service from one of those providers, my inlaws just moved to this from satalite and its way faster(bell, rogers offer this in my area) |

The cell idea is a good one, they just need to make sure to find out their data allowance, and keep track of their usage. For example, Verizon is 5gigabytes/mo for $60 and something like $2 per megabyte after that. Probably fine for general gaming but you wouldn't want to be in the habit of leaving your chars up for extended afks. |

Thanks for all the info. Yeah it's pretty rural. I had to put in almost a mile of water line and phone line to reach the nearest utility. And cell service is intermittent. But it's gorgeous! Here's a pic of me and my buddy Mike down in the creek (I'm the one in the cowboy hat) ![]() Downloaded 63 times Can you see that one? ~the goathearder formerly known as Durezil... |
