Quickie explanation of RAID for non-techies: - Redundant Array of Independant Disks Used to 'group' multiple hard drives to make one (or more) logical drives usually spanning said multiple drives. There are several 'type' of RAID configuration: RAID 0 and 1 (3 and 5 not listed) 0 - data striping, but no redundancy (data is written across multiple drives) 1 - disk mirroring (where one drive is copied on another as backup) there is more information, in depth, at the link of RAID above. |

The reason many people think Raid0 is good for gaming is that when it does its reads and writes over multiple drives, they are done at the same time, so the HD data bandwidth is almost doubled. Which speeds things up when reading data from the hard drive -- like loading model data before character select screen, and while zoning, etc. The downside of raid0 is that if one hard drive crashes, you are screwed since only half of the OS is on the other hard drive. This scares some people so they are happy with having 2 seperate hard drivers .. if one goes, the others are still usable (assuming you have something bootable). Since I tend to rebuild PCs 2 or 3 times a year, I don't care if one HD crashses and messes me up -- get a replacment hard drive and re-build. |
