On forming groups.
It's Much easier with a group of people that you know.. when you know their class and there skills and even their talents. However.. that's not always the case. Different situations sometimes need different group formations. However, as a fallback there is always the general formula that almost always works in any situation.
There should be a Main group.. the one group that will take the licking and keep on ticking. With that in mind, you don't want to cripple the other groups. So, think about it a bit and start with who will be the main tank. The main tank will USUALLY be a combination of highest level and best equipped. (I'm assuming you don't know everyone present intimately, because if you do, you KNOW who the best tank is). If a warrior is there at lvl 30 but wearing banded, you may want the lvl 17 SK wearing the 20kpp of gear to be the Main tank instead.
After you pick the main tank, the main healer is usually an obvious choice. and should be added to the group.
Next I think about it a bit, and try to balance the groups. The main group may want to have the main puller, to stay in better control. The puller will usually be someone very familiar with pulling, or one of the FD able classes if you aren't familiar with the zone.
So now you have your MT (main tank), Cleric, Puller in the main group. Often in a raid situation you need crowd control. What happens to the crowd control people INVARIABLY... they get hit by the mobs. What else is there to think about with crowd control people? They often need to be in close contact with the main tank. What mob next? ect.. so I like to put the crowd control person also in the main group.
Now we have the MT, Cleric, Puller, Crowd Control in the main group.
Now I start looking at who else is here and what other groups can be formed up. I like balance. The second group should also have a Tank, Healer, Crowd control if possible.
Third group same thing if you can. The healer may not be a cleric.. perhaps a druid or shaman. The tank may not be a warrior.. maybe an SK or Paladin. Obviously use what's available. Balance the groups as much as you can. If the Main group goes down.. can the second group take over the position and still have many poeple on the raid survive? That's the goal.
Ok.. many classes may be left out here.. you have more poeple <and NEED them> than MT, Healer, Puller, Crowd Control.. you also have the Damage Dealers. Mages, Rangers, Wizard, Rogues etcs.. spread the damage dealers out among the groups. Try to make all the groups pretty close to evenly powered, except make sure the Main Group is the strongest. They will take the most of the beating, and having one really strong group will help Everyone survive.
Ok.. I've left out tons I know. this was a quick response and I hope it helps.. it's some of how I think when i'm making groups on a raid. Note that I often change what I think or think differently when the situation calls for it.
