There was some discussion in guild chat this morning of whether an aug is destroyed when an evolving item levels.

Does anyone know?

I do not believe that augs will be lost, but haven't personally tested it.
It's XP on the item that moves it up in levels, if it lost the xp, it would go back to a previous level.

It does not actually CHANGE into a different item, more like unlocking higher abilities. So augs should not be lost.

Augs are not lost. My rogue and monk are using the new evolving weapons from the brell's rest vendor.
