I just heard the news that Afterlife de-guilded yesterday. Ok, that's a lie, they de-EQed. Apparently the guild is sick of the new changes by the management EQ that they all moved to play Worlds of Warcraft. I'd post a link to the Afterlife message board posts about it, but there was a little too much profanity used on it for me to think it was appropriate.

I think it's kinda sad to see EQ's "THE EverQuest guild" disband. Many people are closely watching other uber guilds to see if they follow suit, will stay, or will wait to make the switch to EQ2. I remember hearing Fires of Heaven was considering leaving too (or did they, I don't actually know). Makes you wonder what the future of the game will be -especially if more uber guilds leave, making the creation of more uber-level zones possibly unnecessary or less of a priority. 8-O

Hey, good riddance, with all due respect. Kill their characters, destroy their items. Maybe then I can start selling tradeskilled items again for profit :)

I think I said that wrong Malbro. I didn't mean to make it sound like the end of uber guilds was the end of EQ, but the end of uber guilds would start a new trend in EQ development.

In many ways I would imagine that the uber guilds have significant say in what happens to the game. The development of PoP, for instance, was primarily because there were so many high level guilds and players (consider how difficult those zones are, the level restrictions on them, and what it takes to get to half of them), and they were getting bored with Velious and Luclin upper-end zones. Velious, too, was created because of the increase of high level players (35+). I think the fate of the uber guilds, and their staying power, will reflect heavily on what happens to EQ development. If there is less need for upper-end zones because of less guilds to occupy them, but an increase in players within the 40s-50s range, chances are they're going to make more zones dedicated to those level ranges than zones that only the best of the best can survive in. After all, why build and maintain a bunch of zones that nobody will go to?

If they all do start leaving, maybe it will start another run of the "good old days" when people played to play, less obsessed competition for this and that, and a return of the concept of playing EQ for the purposes of having fun not (aka, Family Guild Style ) I agree with you Drex, that it may also help to reduce the price inflation and deflation of items because there will be less people able to get those high end things, so the value of the less-upper end things might start going up again. How much does a Centi Long-Sword go for nowadays?

I agree. If the uber guilds abandon EQ for WoW then Sony is going to focus more on EQII in an attempt to lure them back. Most expansions have been released as a result of upper end players being bored, and if they leave they're going to do what they can to get them back. There are roughly 1.4 million people currently subscribing to MMORPGs and EQ has about 500,000 of those. WoW is the first real competition Everquest has had since it's release, and Sony knows that.

Keep in mind tho....for every "uber" guild who disbands and/or leaves EQ, there are others to take their places. There are those EQ junkies out there who will refuse to leave the game until they bring the last server down...myself being 1 of them. FoH did leave and goto WoW for beta, but they had members who stayed behind and for one reason or another are still littering the EQ airwaves....and same is probably for other guilds as well. Really tho, the guilds disband, others form, names change, but the characters remain....EQ II might give EQ a run for it's money, but speculation has dictated that is how it was going to happen anyway.....maybe it will and maybe it won't. There was a mass exodus for SWG when it first came out. Now there are many players not focusing on SWG as they are EQ...EQ provides the content and the longevity for many of the 500,000 subscribers. EQ doesn't have an ending unless the individual makes their own. Some people have determined that after so and such goal has been met then they end their EQ career and be done with it. While others will linger ....but anyway....I have always contended, let the people who thirst for different platforms have their choices...just leave me my EQ.

Lol. I agree with lots of what Reka said  . I miss the good old days of EQ and am still hopeful that part of the game will be revived and expanded upon sometime. That said, I still think EQ as-is is the best game I've ever played and seein as I've been playing for over 3 years and dont plan on stopping....they must be doing something right =P.

I've always said that the best part of EQ is all the many ways that people can choose to enjoy the game. For some people that means mindless slaughter to release their hostility, others like the scavenger hunt aspects of newbie quests. Some people don't like to do anything that involes more then one group because they like a casual social enviornment that can get lost in the raids of 72 people that others live for. Some role players like to speak in 'old English' while others do things like a monk I heard about who tried to GM baking without using any forms of meat since it went against a true monks beliefs. However you choose to enjoy EQ is up to you.

A long time ago Lower Guk was the endgame zone and everyone fought for spots there. An expansion later it was Sebilis. As more people catch up there needs to be more places for all the people to go. At this time EQ's population is very top heavy and therefore this is a need to keep expanding zones to higher levels. If you feel that zones have nothing to offer you then you can always stick to ones that you are more comforable with. Expansion does not take away from existing content, but rather gives new choices of places to explore.

FoH and afterlife essentially BEAT Everquest. They made it as far as was available and could easily keep up with the new content as it came out. For them to continue to be challenged they needed a fresh start and felt that WoW offers them that.

i agree, eq should be able to be enjoyed alot of ways, but the way that the high end is designed doesnt help promote my playstyle. if i speak old english people tell me to speak normal and stop being weird, if i want to go explore a scary dungeon and feel like im in some kind of epic story (moria, LoTR) few if any will join me because its not the BEST and FASTEST way to be leet. there is one person who i must say has really helped me and stayed around when i wanted to be a hero in the middle of an old world dungeon is wittlekitty, but she has been having a few pc problems and just got back, and i kind doubt now that she has a pc that can handle 72 people raids, i just wish that eq could TRY to be more RP'r and explorer friendly. they MADE GoD for the ubers, not the casual gamer, and thats a fact! and you have to admit that with the entire game moving up and up it makes it hard to think about fooling around with a silly old explorer like myself in some long forgotten dungeon. im glad im a pally though so i can do a little on my own. but after 55 its HARD to live through a blue.

Let them leave I say...I have yet to kill all 10 dragons, scale Veeshan's Peak and bring it low, raze the Dragon Necroplis, Plunder the Sleeper's tomb or greet the High Lord Inquisitor with my sword in his back. I have seen alot in EQ, but there is even MORE I HAVEN'T seen :) but I am sticking around until I do.
